Many of our memories are still on videotapes but now that we are in the 21st Century, there are much newer technologies being used to capture those moments. One of the ways you can save those memories from yester year is by connecting the VCR to the computer and transferring the audio and images from tapes to the computer. Once the analog signals are changed to digital, you will be able to download the material onto a CD for safe keeping.
Make sure you plug your VCR in near the computer. Turn the speakers on the computer on and open your recording software. You may be using sound recording software or movie making software that can capture both sound and the images from the VCR recording.
If you are transferring audio only, make sure that you have a cable with two RCA plugs on one end that you can connect to the VCR. Connect the plug at the other end to the “line –in “ jack on sound card.
With the speakers turned on, select the “line- in” as the source, on the computer when prompted. Choose “new” from your file menu to select the recording type. Play a selection of the audio you wish to record and set the sound level, which should be as high as possible without going into the red section on the meter.
When you have set the audio levels properly, rewind the tape to the beginning point where you would like to start recording and hit “zero” on the counter. Then rewind the tape just a little further.
Select the proper command to record on the computer. It might be ‘record” “save” “extract to file” or something similar. When you have done this, hit “play” on the VCR. Just before the counter reaches “zero” select the command to start the recording.
When you are done, end the recording and choose to have it saved as a WAV file.
